Epitheliogenesis imperfecta (aplasia cutis, imperfect skin)

Congenital condition in which the piglet is born with the absence of discrete areas of skin. It is rare.

Description

The piglet is born deprived of skin areas. It usually occurs in the limbs or flanks and is usually associated with an individual animal (not a litter).

 

Symptoms

  • It is not present.

Nursing piglets

  • Have areas with no skin at birth.

 

Causes / Contributing Factors

An abnormality during development.

 

Diagnosis

It is based on clinical signs.

 

Control/Prevention

  • None since the case is sporadic.
  • If the affected areas are small, piglet will heal gradually.
  • In severe cases piglet should be euthanized
