Haematopinus suis is the pig louse which can cause anemia, and is the main route of swinepox transmission.

The Haematopinus suis louse is found worldwide. Its importance is variable as it can cause anemia and is the main way of transmission swinepox.

  • Anemia.
  • Irritation of skin.
  • Red skin lesions.
  • Hairy pigs.

Outdoors pig farming.



Diagnosis

Clinical examination: lice are large and easily visualized especially in the neck, flank, and in the inner parts of the legs.



Control / Prevention

  • Lice are susceptible to many insecticides.
  • The use of insecticides requires a second application in 10-20 days to break the production cycle.
