Pneumonia caused by Metastrongylus spp worms is found worldwide, especially in pigs raised outdoors.

Description

Pulmonary infection with Metastrongylus spp worms cause pneumonia in pigs. The worms are found in the bronchi and bronchioles.

 

Symptoms

Sows, nursery and fattening

  • Tremors.
  • Slow growth.
  • Loss of weight.
  • Pneumonia with cough.

Causes / Contributing Factors

  • Pigs raised outdoors, especially those exposed to the ground.

 

Diagnosis

Analyze feces searching for typical eggs; evaluation of lung tissue.


Control / Prevention

  • Limit access of pigs to the ground.
  • Use of anthelmintic.
