The red stomach worm can cause gastritis.

Description

Hyostrongylus rubidus worm affects the stomach of pigs. Its importance and pathology are not well known. Its importance is due to finding it in the stomach, because its color makes it highly visible in a necropsy.

 

Symptoms

Sows, nursery and fattening

  • It is suspected that it has effects on growth.

 

Causes / Contributing Factors

  • Breeding pigs outdoors with access to pasture.

 

Diagnosis

  • Analysis of feces searching for the usual eggs. Necropsy searching for stomach worm.

 

Control / Prevention

  • Limit access of pigs to pasture.
  • Use of anthelmintic.
