Pig glossary

DONE Re: Pietrain

Pig breed native to Belgium, with an excellent conformation, with a short length, ample loin and muscled back. The characteristic colour of this breed is white with black spots distributed irregularly. It has short and wide ears that point forward and upwards.

It has good traits as a terminal line, because it passes on its high lean tissue percentage, a higher proportion of prime cuts and a better commercial classification to its offspring. On the other hand, it has a low growth rate, a poor feed conversion ratio and a low prolificacy, and often the presence of PSE (pale, soft and exudative) meat.
