His academic carrier started back in 1998 and he did his PhD from 1999 to 2002 focusing on energy and protein metabolism of pregnant and lactating sows. After that he did a post doc and stayed 4 month at University of Illinois in Walter Hurley’s lab. During this period he worked on regulation of mammary growth and gained interest in mammary function and regulation of colostrum and milk production. Since 2005 he has worked as a senior scientist and focused on how colostrum and milk production may be enhanced by optimising sow nutrition.

Much attention has been paid to the transition period from late gestation to early lactation, and how nutritional needs and timing of nutrient supply is highly relevant factors for hyperprolific sow. Intake of colostrum and piglet survival has also been a central part of these studies. During the last 7-8 years, a lot of effort has been put into understanding how nutrients are extracted and utilized by different organs within the sow during late gestation and throughout lactation. In 2018 he was appointed adjunct professor at Sichuan Agricultural University, China.
