China's breeding sow inventory dips

According to data from the Ministry of Agriculture, the number of breeding sows in China at the end of October was 39.9 million head, representing a 1.1% decrease from September and a 2.1% decrease from a year ago. It is the first time in 17 months that the number of sows has dipped below 40 million.

China's Implementation Plan for Pig Production Capacity Regulation considers "normal" sow inventory to be 39 million head, meaning the October production capacity is within the green zone (102.3% of the normal inventory).
