Spinal cord

It extends from the brain to the tail along the spinal canal (space left in the central area of the vertebrae). Between each vertebra, the spinal cord sends nervous projections that branch out along all the body of the animal. The spinal cord is in charge of the transmission of the nerve impulses from sensory receptors or sense organs toward the central nervous system (afferent) and from the central nervous system toward the peripheral effector organs (efferent).
