Astrid de Greeff works at Wageningen Bioveterinary Research (WBVR) at the department of Infection Biology where she has a double function, dividing her time between project management and business development. She graduated as a medical biologist at Utrecht University, after which she obtained her Ph. D. at the University of Amsterdam on ‘Pathogenesis of Streptococcus suis infections in pigs’, after which she further specialized in veterinary streptococcal infections at WBVR . In recent years, her research focussed on intestinal health and immune competence, including the implementation of novel techniques like microbiome sequencing and transcription profiling. Nowadays, she is involved in research on the crossing borders of molecular biology, microbiology, immunology and nutrition with a focus on health and infection. Research focuses on the complex interactions between hosts (livestock) and pathogens. As a projectleader Astrid is a generalist, combining complimentary techniques towards a multidisciplinary solution for scientific and commercial challenges. Her research is focused on host responses to infections, nutritional interventions, and vaccines in healthy and diseased livestock. Astrid has a special interest in Streptococcus suis infections in piglets, in particular in host pathogen interactions and pathogenesis studies to identify new vaccine candidates or improve diagnostics. She is also involved in several projects on (gut) health of livestock, where the effect of (dietary) interventions on intestinal gene expression and morphology, intestinal development and microbiota composition is studied. Astrid strongly believes that connecting people is a key prerequisite for making both scientific and commercial progress.
